In Washington, Soldier Killed In Motorcycle Collision

WASHINGTON - A soldier based out of Ft. Lewis was killed when he drove his motorcycle off the road and struck a tree on Bald Hill Rd SE at 122nd Ave. in rural Thurston County. The roadway was blocked for approximately 3 hours for the investigation.

The September 28th incident occurred at 5:40 p.m. when the State Patrol began to receive reports of a serious injury motorcycle collision on Bald Hill Rd SE at 122nd Ave. According to witnesses, 24 year-old Gerry Willard Christensen of Yelm, was driving a 2006 Suzuki SV650K Sport Bike southbound on Bald Hill Rd SE at a high rate of speed. Christensen passed a vehicle over a double yellow line in a curve to the left when an oncoming vehicle was approaching from the northbound lane. Christensen swerved back into the southbound lane and went off the roadway and struck a tree. Sadly, Christensen sustained life-threatening injuries and died at the scene.

Christensen was wearing a helmet and did have a motorcycle endorsement. Troopers do not believe alcohol was a factor in this collision. Investigators believe that speed and improper passing were contributing factors in this tragic collision. Analysis of motorcycle crash data indicates that approximately 60% of motorcycle fatalities are single-vehicle incidents, with the most common causes being excessive speed, impaired driving, and inability to stay in the lane.
