Transportation Safety Emphasized in Statewide, Month-long Campaign

Activities include safety fairs and the National Work Zone Memorial

May 1, 2007-- With Governor Ted Kulongoski’s proclamation of May as “Transportation Safety Awareness” month in Oregon, advocates around the state are focusing on educating young and old alike, on foot or bicycle, in cars, trucks or riding motorcycles.

“My main concern is for safety — that no matter how you get from point A to point B, you do it safely,” Kulongoski said. The Governor’s proclamation offers support for the Oregon Department of Transportation’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about proper safety belt and child restraint use, controlling speed, driving courteously, and avoiding alcohol and drug-impaired driving. Kulongoski also commends programs for motorcyclists, bicyclists, pedestrians, emergency medical services, safety corridors and community traffic safety for their contributions to reducing property damage, injuries and fatalities.

To commemorate Transportation Safety Month, communities around the state are hosting a variety of safety related activities, including child safety seat clinics, bike rodeos, safety awareness fairs and more.

As part of the month’s activities, the National Work Zone Memorial, honoring those who have lost their lives in work zone-related crashes, will be at Portland’s Lloyd Center from May 7 – 17. ODOT Director Matthew Garrett and Oregon State Police Captain Gerry Gregg are scheduled to pay their respects at the wall from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Friday, May 11. Preliminary numbers from 2006 show a decrease in work zone crash fatalities on Oregon roads, down to 5 from 20 fatalities in 2005 and 12 fatalities in 2004.
