In Oregon, Critical Injury Motorcycle Crash

Oregon State Police (OSP) is investigating a motorcycle crash that critically injured a Gresham-area man early Sunday morning on Highway 26 underneath the SE 282nd Avenue overpass east of Gresham.

On August 5, 2007 at approximately 12:58 a.m. OSP Trooper Jess Elzy drove upon the scene of a serious injury motorcycle crash westbound on Highway 26 underneath the SE 282 Avenue overpass. Trooper Elzy and others who stopped to help began treating the operator, identified as WILLIAM E. WALDEN, age 55, from Gresham, who had been ejected from the motorcycle.

Boring Fire Department and AMR ambulance personnel responded to continue treatment until WALDEN could be transported by LifeFlight to Oregon Health Sciences University. He is reported to be in critical condition at this time.

Preliminary investigation indicates WALDEN's 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle was westbound on Highway 26 near milepost 17.5 when it struck the guardrail in the center median underneath the overpass. The motorcycle traveled about 60 feet scraping the guardrail before sliding across the westbound lanes into a ditch on the north side of the highway.

WALDEN was ejected from the motorcycle and was lying in the middle of the left westbound lane. His protective helmet came off during the crash.

OSP troopers from Government Camp and Portland offices are continuing the investigation. Alcohol is a possible contributing factor in this crash.

Assistance at the scene provided by Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, Sandy Police Department, and ODOT. The westbound lanes were closed until 2:45 a.m. The eastbound lane was closed about 30 minutes to allow for LifeFlight to land for patient transport.
