Motorcyle Safety For The Summer In Illinois

Although highly recommended as a valuable piece of safety equipment, helmets are not mandatory in Illinois.  If you plan to travel outside of the state, it is recommended that you contact the state you will be visiting or passing through since many of them do have mandatory helmet laws.

Motorcycles are required to have an activated headlamp on, day or night, when riding on the street.  This regulation was put in place to increase the motorcycle's visibility to other motorists. The motorcyclist and passenger must wear eye protection at all times.  Traveling at even a modest speed and getting struck in the eye by a small rock or even a bug can be very detrimental to one's eyesight.  The only time eye protection is not required is if the motorcycle has a windshield that extends above the operator's eyes when seated in a normal upright riding position.

A sure sign summer is just around the corner is the increasing amount of motorcycle traffic on our area roadways.  Whether a seasoned veteran or a novice motorcyclist, a refresher on some of the specific rules and regulations that apply to motorcycles is in order.

First, and foremost, motorcycle operators are required by law not only to have a valid driver's license, but also to acquire the proper motorcycle classification to legally operate on the street.  A violation of this second requirement can result in suspension of one's driving privileges.

In regard to safety issues, the operation of a motorcycle on one wheelcommonly called a "wheelie"is not only dangerous, but also illegal.  It is also illegal and unsafe to drive between lanes of traffic.
